Your life has several aspects: physical, spiritual, emotional, financial, and more. Every aspect is important and should receive a fair amount of attention if you want to enjoy balance.
To ensure that every aspect of your life is thriving, taking care of yourself shouldn’t be arbitrary but a well-thought-out activity. You should know what you want to achieve in each area of your life and how you plan to go about it.
I am all about self-care, and to help you take care of all aspects of your life, I have come up with this checklist. It contains things to make a regular part of your life so you can enjoy a balanced life.
As you go through the list, you’ll see how these things benefit you. Feel free to include them all in your self-care checklist, and enjoy the rewards of a balanced life.
Drink Sufficient Water Daily
The fluids from other foods won’t be enough to keep you in good shape, so you need to drink water often. A good rule to stick to is to drink about eight glasses of water daily. Or about 3.7 liters daily if you’re a man and 2.7 liters if you’re a woman.

Also, don’t delay drinking water for too long when thirsty. Keep a bottle or glass of water close at all times so it doesn’t feel stressful to get water to drink.
Get 7–8 Hours of Sleep
I’ll never forget a line from the movie Death Note. L’s handler said, “Sleep is key to strong thought” multiple times, and he wasn’t even lying. When your body gets adequate rest, it is better prepared for its active moments.
Try to get up to seven or eight hours of sleep daily. It doesn’t have to be all at once. You can check how much you slept at night and try to complete it in the day.
Exercise
The benefits of exercise range from helping you stay productive to keeping your body and mind healthy, and the best part is that it’s not as complicated as you think. Just 30 minutes of a combination of different exercises is all you need daily.

These days, some apps and videos can guide you through minutes of exercise, so even if you don’t have an instructor, you can still have some assistance. Many of them don’t require any gym equipment, so you can do them from home.
Eat Balanced, Nutritious Meals
If there’s a cliche you shouldn’t underrate, it’s “You are what you eat.” You can’t expect to have a balanced body in terms of nutrients if you’re not paying attention to what you eat. It’s by intentionally selecting what makes up your meals that you can give your body the nutrients it needs.
Your meals should include healthy carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins and minerals. Doing this may mean you have to eat more fruits or vegetables or cut down on processed food, but never forget you’re doing it for your body.
Schedule Regular Health Check-Ups
Has it been up to three years since you visited the hospital for a check-up? Yes? Then you should probably pause reading this and write going for one in your to-do list for tomorrow. Three years may be too long between check-ups for seniors and those who aren’t in excellent health.

Health check-ups are how you can catch potential health issues before they get significant enough to affect the quality of your life. As you learn about them, you can treat them immediately or stop them from worsening. Even if you don’t learn of any new issues, check-ups provide the much-needed assurance that you are really fine.
Meditate
Among the many advantages of meditation is that it reduces stress and improves the mood. It provides an escape from the things that make you worry for some minutes. You can meditate anywhere from five to fifteen minutes. All you need is some quiet and focus.
Meditation is like exercise. It may be hard from the start, but it will get easier. As you make it a part of your life, you’ll find it easier to concentrate on things, which not only makes you more productive but also helps you stay happier, even when facing challenges.
Journal Your Thoughts and Emotions
One of the best ways to process your emotions is by journaling. You’ll find that writing them down helps to lay them bare before you, and that will help you understand them better. You’ll find clarity, and your mind will prefer that over being overwhelmed.

Another thing journaling does for you is that it serves as a record of your life that you can refer to to find patterns in your day-to-day living. This pattern can point to a progress you can be proud of or an issue you may want to work on. Either way, it makes everything better.
Practice Positive Affirmations
Many people will say negative things about you; you should not be one of them. Remind yourself of the positive sides to life and the best parts of yourself. Be positive when you talk to yourself. No more saying “I’m such an idiot” when you make mistakes. Instead, go with “I have what it takes to do better.”
Positive affirmations don’t only come in handy when you make mistakes. You can and should dish them to yourself unprovoked. Tell yourself you are beautiful and loved and have all it takes to achieve your dreams, even when everything is alright. Keep going at it, and you will become more confident and happier.
Talk to a Friend or Therapist
Sometimes, you just feel like there’s a lot on your mind that you need to offload. Two places you can pour out your heart are friends or a therapist. Your choice of who to talk to will depend on several things, like if you have a close friend that you can trust with secrets, if you want to talk to someone who isn’t part of your regular life but can still help, or if you think you need a professional.

Your close friends may be more available than a therapist may be. However, they may not always have the expertise to help you through specific challenges. What matters is that you aren’t going through things alone, and you feel lighter after spending time with whoever you choose to talk to.
Keep Friends and Family Close
When you have people who care about you, one of the worst things you can do is push them away. Sometimes, you may not even know when you push them away. It could be their multiple messages you don’t reply to or your constant turning down of their invitations.
Make some effort to keep them close. Chat with them. Call them from time to time. Drop by to visit and share a meal with them. Except someone is toxic, I see no reason you’ll not want to try to maintain a good relationship with them.
Participate in Social Activities
Work-to-home-and-home-to-work is not how you get to enjoy a balanced life. There should also be the social aspect. This is where you get to spend time with others doing activities you enjoy. Open mics, festivals, and sports games are some great social opportunities.

You don’t always have to participate in such activities with your friends. Sometimes, go out on your own and meet new people. You never know if you’ll just make new great friends while out or what opportunities a new connection may bring your way in the future.
Besides physical activities, you can also participate in virtual ones. You can find fun events where you can meet new people, contribute to discussions, and play games on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) Spaces or Clubhouse.
Join a Group or Club With Shared Interests
Having people with whom you can do things is always a great idea. These things may be charity outreaches, games, book reviews, art critiques, prayers, or anything else you love to do with others. While doing things alone can be fun, it’s better for many people, including me, to do them with others who also love the activity.
Such groups or clubs won’t only give you a community of people you can enjoy being around. It will also encourage you and help you commit to doing these things regularly. It’s also a great place to meet new people and build lovely friendships based on mutual interests.
Have Fun Regularly
Decide that you must do something really enjoyable regularly, preferably one that doesn’t relate to your work in any way. Having fun can be as simple as playing a game, seeing a movie, or going on a long drive while blasting loud music.
You know what is fun for you. Decide how regularly you can do it—daily, weekly, or monthly. Then, do it religiously. If you don’t make it regular, it may take a long time before you have fun, and it will show in the quality of your life.
Set Boundaries
Guess how you can stop people from making your life uncomfortable, no matter how close they are to you? It’s by letting them know what you can take and can’t. You say this to them clearly, so there are no doubts or confusion regarding how to behave around you or what to expect from you.
We call this setting boundaries. When you set boundaries, you escape the stress of doing things you don’t like or don’t want to. Setting boundaries may not always be enough, though. You have to insist on them if anyone tries to push past them.
Set Daily, Weekly, or Monthly Goals
Don’t just live life assuming you’re achieving things. You may actually be making progress with stuff, but when you set goals, it’s easier to predict and track your progress, and that can make life feel more fulfilling, which will make you feel happier.

Setting goals is also great for achieving huge tasks. Instead of going through the year trying to accomplish something big, you’ll find it easier to break the big goal down. When you do, the smaller goals will feel easier to achieve, and you can go on to handle them one by one, daily, weekly, or monthly.
You can set goals for your career or business, such as expansion or revenue, for your body, such as weight loss, or for your finances, such as settling a debt or saving money for emergencies.
Engage in Faith-Based Activities
Those of us who are people of faith often find that faith activities offer us a better quality of life. Everything from attending regular gatherings to praying to our God and singing songs of praises and worship to helping others in need has its benefits, and it’ll be a shame to miss out on them.
You will feel lighter after pouring your heart to God. You’ll feel more excited after singing some songs. You’ll grow in your faith when you gather regularly with others. The faith aspect of your life can’t be neglected if you want a balanced life.
Volunteer or Do Acts of Kindness
Another aspect of life that you shouldn’t overlook if you want a balanced one is your charitable side. This side involves doing something good for someone else without receiving anything in return.

You can be charitable without money by volunteering your skills to help with people’s projects or with money by sponsoring something that people who lack it will appreciate. The satisfaction that comes from giving freely to someone else is a feeling worth more than a million dollars.
Spoil Yourself Regularly
I know you have much to do with money—groceries, bills, savings, investments, etc. Sometimes, when you don’t feel like you are making enough money, you forget one very important item to spend on. That item is you!
From time to time, keep some money aside to spend on yourself. Buy something fancy you like, or visit a city on your bucket list. Just do something that will make you feel good. And as you spoil yourself, remind yourself that it’s not a waste of money but an investment in your well-being.
Review Your Spending Habits
To take care of yourself on this beautiful planet of ours, you need money, and if you spend recklessly, how much money will you have left for self-care? If it feels like you’re not always having money for things, it’s time to review your spending habits.

Review your bills for those you don’t need anymore. If you haven’t used a subscription for a few months—gym, a magazine, streaming, etc.—you may want to consider letting it go for now and saving that money or spending it on another aspect of your life that needs it.
Think about purchases before you make them. Are they very necessary? Can you substitute them comfortably with something you already have? Why are you really buying them? Let these questions guide you into deciding whether you’ll buy them.
Time to Build Your Self-Care Checklist
Reading through this list, it is obvious I care about you. I just want you to enjoy a happy, productive, healthy, and balanced life, and I believe the content of this checklist will help you achieve that.
It’s time to start building your self-care checklist. Go through this guide and select the headings as your checklist items. Then, work towards ticking every item on the checklist.
As you do so, remember that it’s okay to make mistakes and feel like you’re not progressing sometimes. However, it’s essential to try again and push until you achieve as much balance as possible.
I believe you found this checklist helpful. If you did, please share it with someone else.
